A leaky toilet is unforgiving. It efficiently and senselessly wastes water by as much as 200 gallons in a day. When you consider the ugly impact it has on your water bill (as well as on the environment), then you’ll want to check your house for a leaky toilet, and even your friends’ houses just to do them the favor. Thankfully, the average person can check a leaky toilet since different toilet designs essentially have the same functions for their mechanism. The most common culprit would have to be the rubber flush valve that covers the bottom of the tank-this controls the water’s entry into the bowl and if not sitting properly, can lead to a serious water leak. Another possible reason is a leaking refill valve which ends in an overfilled tank. Want to fix a leaky toilet on your own? Here are a few simple DIY tips.

Materials You Needed:

Pencil and Food Coloring

Step 1-Check the Flush Valve

Since you’ll be leaving the tank for 20 to 30 minutes without using and flushing, it’s best if you used it before you perform this test. Carefully open the cover of your toilet tank. Then draw a line inside the tank to accurately mark the water level. Next, turn off the water supply valve at the bottom of the toilet tank, making sure it’s tight. Then leave for half and hour. Afterwards, check if the water level still matches and touches your line. If it’s considerably fallen below your mark, then the problem is with your flush valve which may not be seated right. Go to Step 4 or test the other parts of your tank.

Step 2-Test the Refill Valve

You can twist back the tank’s water supply valve on. Next, put a few drops of food coloring or dye or what have you inside the toilet tank. Leave the toilet unused for a good while: 30 minutes to 1 hour is ideal. If you see the food coloring tinting the water in the bowl then that’s not a good sign. Proceed to Step 5 or continue to the next step.

Step 3-Test the Refill Tube

Now stand back and flush the toilet. Take note of how the water flows out of the Refill Tube. If it is aimed at the long plastic Overflow Pipe, then its position is correct. If it is not positioned correctly, go to Step 6.

Step 4-Reseat your Flush Valve

Flush the toilet if there is still water inside the tank. Align the guide arm over the seat. Press the trip handle and observe the behavior of the flush valve. If the lifting hardware is holding the flapper off its seat, then adjust the hardware or the flapper to have it fit its valve seat.

Step 5-Adjust the Refill Valve

Open the water supply valve to allow the water to fill the toilet tank. Bend the float arm of the Refill Valve to set the water level about of an inch from the top of the Overflow Pipe. Position the float in such a way that it does not touch the other parts. Unscrew the float and listen for signs of water inside. Replace if necessary.

Step 6-Fixing the Refill Tube

Position the Refill Tube over the Overflow Pipe. If it goes below the water level, lift it up higher. Flush the toilet and repeat Steps 1 to 3 to check for leaks again.

If all these steps still fail to remedy a leaky toilet or if any of the parts would need replacement, you may have to contact your friendly neighborhood plumber to help you determine the real cause of the problem. The same applies when you would rather not risk damaging the working parts of the toilet by your lack of experience in handling the same.

To have low water pressure in the house can be a pesky situation to say the least. Showering and washing times would suffer, among other consequences. If you just had new fixtures put in, these may be the reason. When the change of the pressure is abrupt, it could also be a sign of an underlying problem in your pipes. Finding the cause would help you decide on whether or not a remedy is in order.

Faucet Style

It’s perfectly normal in a recently built house to have low water pressure. Older houses often make use of a faucet assembly that involves a washer and valve seat that determines its opening and closing. Water flow is controlled by how far away you twist the handle that, in turn, pulls the washer farther away from the valve seat. The wider the gap between the two, the bigger the opening is for the water to flow. On the other hand, newer houses are equipped with fixtures that comply with the new mandatory water-saving guidelines. The one main difference is the absence of washers. What replaces are cartridges that have aerators at their end, controlling the water flow. These flow restrictors however are prone to clogging whenever there is residue buildup, and this further limits the water pressure remarkably. Water, no matter how treated and purified still has carries particles, sediments, and tiny solid deposits which can block the holes and add to the low water pressure.

Besides the clog in the aerators/flow restrictors, another possible reason for low water pressure, especially in your hot shower, is a defective anti-scald valve. Simply have your plumber replace and reinstall the fixture for you.

Bad Pipes

Another possible cause for your lower water pressure could be that the flow is diverted somewhere. Your pipes could have burst, or are leaking to the point that water flowing towards your faucets is reduced. When this happens, you could be facing major repairs ahead of you. These openings are not only wasting you some water, it can serve as entry points for soil and other particles to enter, clogging your pipes and posing some health issues to your family. All these problems would require emergency plumbing care so being vigilant of your pipes’ condition would not only help in increasing your water’s pressure; it would save you from water damage and unplanned expenses.

Water Supply

Try to check your main water valve which controls the water flow into your home. In many cases, people overlook their main valve, not knowing that a partially or totally shut off main valve is responsible for the low water pressure. Also, before you call the emergency plumber, a quick tip would be to ask your neighbors if they are experiencing the same low water pressure problem. Maybe there are just repairs on the water lines undergoing somewhere in your local, and the water company has momentarily decreased or totally shut off the flow. Check if a simple adjustment in your water pressure regulator, such as loosening a nut, would do the trick. Just don’t overdo it and set it too high or you risk bursting your pipes.

Sometimes, you just have to leave it to the hands of the experts. If water supply has never been a problem in your area and suddenly you experience unexplainable low water pressure, it’s time to contact an emergency plumber. Trust me: they know what to do to solve all your plumbing problems.

Put an end to your Low Water Pressure problems now! Call our best Expert Plumbers for absolutely free consultation.

When a property for either a home or commercial building is evaluated for a septic tank installation, the inspector is checking to see if the site is suitable for onsite waste water treatment. An evaluation is very important because it helps protect homeowners from incurring costs in the future if there is a problem due to the location of the septic tank, and it protects the public and environment by ensuring the waste water will be disposed of and returned to the water table in a clean and healthy manner. Below is a general guide on how a septic tank site evaluation is performed:

1. A professional certified to evaluate septic sites will come to the property to do the septic site evaluation. The professional assesses the near by water sources and environmental considerations to make sure there is no health or safety hazard if the septic tank is installed. For instance, the inspector does not want waste water flowing into a creek or into a well.

2. Once the site area has been assessed, the inspector will assess the various levels of soil up to five feet into the ground. The homeowner will have hired an excavator to come out and dig a pit prior to the evaluation. The inspector will assess whether the soil conditions will support a septic tank. The soil assessment will look at such qualities as “soil texture” and “soil structure.” The inspector will determine if the soil will allow for a large enough drain-field for the water that will be returned to the ground after being treated in the septic tank.

3. A soil percolation test, or PERC test, will be performed to determine the rate in which soil absorbs a specific volume of water. This is done to make sure the soil is appropriate for a soak-away, and to make sure that the soak-away is designed correctly. It will also indicate the size of the septic system to be used and how it will be designed. To perform a percolation test, a set of holes are dug 300mm square and 300mm below the proposed outlet from the septic tanks or sewage treatment plant. The sides of the holes are mixed before the holes are pre-soaked. A controlled amount of water is poured in the hole and the test reading is based on how long it takes the soil to absorb the water added to the hole. A percolation test is considered to have failed if the results are fewer than 12 or over 100 seconds/mm drop. As well, a percolation test should not be carried out during bad weather, and if it is performed during the summer, then the number of times performing the test should be increased depending on the recent weather.

4. Once approved, that is, the results show proper adsorption, the septic marking points will be added to a survey to show where the septic tank will be located, As well, the area chosen will be free of trees and tree roots, underground cables, and away from buildings, property lines, or water sources such as creeks.

Septic tanks are required for any business or home. A Septic Tank Site Evaluation is mandatory to ensure the safety of the public and the environment. By understanding what the inspection involves, a homeowner can better prepare and budget for the expense.

Septic tank system can be environmentally friendly, effective and economical. FAST biological septic systems replace septic tanks and sewer lines. FAST wastewater treatment neutralizes septic sewage, grease trap interceptors, consuming contaminants, releasing just air and clear, odorless water.

There are quite a number of homes that look really good from the outside but not any stranger who passes by would have the chance to ever detect that there is a big problem inside. For instance, how will anyone know when the problems could be found in the tubes and pipes that surround the house? Yes, leaks and low pressure could be a very bad problem when it comes to water supply.

Then a bell will certainly ring in your head now and to the tune of Ghostbusters’s theme: If there is something strange in your water supply, which you got to call? Plumbers Bournemouth! Certainly you have to do that.

Water is not necessarily a problem in Bournemouth being it is a place that is quite close to the water but when the pipes and the tubes get real busted, that is when the problems just come up. Should you just let it go that way? There is a problem with people at some point for people do not seem to pay attention to the leaks in the pipes that they put it off until the problem worsen. That sure is not a good thing. You know that plumbers Bournemouth are just a few numbers away and this day and age, you could access them through websites! Now there is no need to scan through the yellow pages like a frantic.

But before you even have all of these problems, the number one thing is prevention. A good way is to always see to it that your pipes are in good condition. If there are rusts in the pipes, change it right away. This might be a cause of water contamination and even further problems.

It would also be good to fix the broken pipes right away. You should not wait for water to spill all over. It is a precious resource and you have to see to it that it does not get spilled!

Have plumbers Bournemouth fix and make regular check-ups of your house pipes and waterways. This will never be a problem since they are just around the neighborhood. The money that you spend for their services might just save you more if you will let problems just get off hand. Although a clich, prevention is still better than cure. You have to see to it that all of the problems and possible things that might cause you problems would be fixed and checked before they get even broken.

And of course, the number one thing that will keep your waterways as healthy as new is to take care of them on your own. For instance, never turn the faucet on in haste and in extreme, never step on the pipes and use the best quality pipes so that problems will never occur. You might think that these are very natural and can cause minimal harm but you know that big problems stem from small beginnings. These little things will be the same thing that the plumbers will tell you.

Plumbing problems should never be enough cause to make you freak out these days. plumbers bournemouth is there to the rescue. You can easily find them to address your worries pertinent to house pipes and waterways.

As one of the most important systems in the home, the plumbing system must be properly maintained or problems can develop causing a homeowner a big headache. One of the most annoying plumbing problems is a toilet leak. A toilet leak is not only frustrating, but it can waste water and increase your water bill. Signs of a toilet leak can include: sounds coming from the toilet when it is not running, a homeowner has to keep the handle pressed so that the tank will empty, the water is running over the top of the overflow, water is running down the sides of toilet even when there is flushing, and the toilet continues to run even though the handle has not been pressed. These are visible indications that you may have a toilet leak; however, you can still have a toilet leak and not see or hear it. This type of leak is called a silent toilet leak. To properly diagnose a silent toilet leak there are a couple of tests that you can perform:

1. For most homeowners, performing a dye test for a silent toilet leak is a popular choice. Purchase dye from a plumbing supplier or water company. It is usually a red dye. Once you have acquired the dye, you can start to perform the leak test. First, remove the cover of the water tank. Remove any substance such as a drain cleaner that may be colouring the water. It is important that you have clear water to do the test. Put enough dye in the tank water so that there is a deep colour. Wait for about a half hour and then check to see if the water in the bowl has turned the colour of the dye. If the water has colour, then you definitely have a toilet leak.

2. Another silent toilet leak detecting test you can perform is to turn the water off at the water pipe that runs to the toilet before you go to bed. Check the water level in the morning. If you discover there is water loss in the tank, then you have a toilet leak.

Toilet leaks toilets are responsible for a large volume of water waste as a toilet leak can waste as much 500 gallons of water a day; which is clearly not good water conservation. Reasons for a toilet leak can include: worn out flapper or ball, damaged seat beneath the flapper, damaged gasket under the flush valve, hole or crack in the overflow tube, and a new seat or washer is needed for a ballcock.

Because a silent leak cannot be seen or heard, many homeowners do not realize they have a toilet leak until it is a serious problem and they have wasted a huge amount of water. Testing for silent leaks should be added to your plumbing system maintenance program. The benefit of testing for silent toilet leaks is you will save money on your water bills, practice responsible water conservation, and ensure that your toilet runs properly which is a definite necessity.

Looking for a local plumber to fix your plumbing problems? Then contact the plumbing experts at Mr.Rooter, offering plumbers Aurora and drains Richmond Hill services as well as plumbing services all across Canada.

The plumbing system consists of many essential components that must be handled with special care to avoid damage to a component and the entire plumbing system. There are a number of things that can cause a problem in the plumbing system which can negatively impact the system and the home. One such problem is a leak in the plumbing system.

A leak in the plumbing system is not only an annoying problem, but it can also become quite costly as it can drastically increase the water bill. As well, a small leak that is not repaired in a timely manner can eventually develop into an expensive repair job. To avoid water waste and an expensive repair bill, it is important to know how to detect leaks in the plumbing system.

Below is a helpful guide on how to detect a leak in plumbing systems:

1. If you have copper pipes, it is easy to check for leaks in these pipes. When examining your copper pipes, you will be able to identify a leak by a white circle that will have formed around the area of the pipe that is leaking.

2. You can check to see if there is a leak in the plumbing by checking your water meter. Turn off all of the taps and then check the water meter. If the water meter is still moving, this could suggest that there is a leak.

3. There are places in the home that should be checked for a leak. Places to check to see if there is a leak includes: water dripping around shower heads, toilet that is constantly running when not in use, water dripping from faucets, chronic sewer backups, foul odours, high water bills, cracked and moist foundation or concrete, moist spots under the carpets, moist or discoloured walls, floors, and ceilings, and mould and mildew growth. As well, check the water heating system, washing machine, pool, and basement, for visible signs of leaks. A water pump that is constantly running when not in use is another sign there may be a plumbing leak.

5. An effective way to check for leaks in your plumbing system is to perform a silent leak test in your toilet. You can use a red dye from a plumbing supplier or red food colouring. You just have to make sure the water in the toilet and tank is clear. Then, add the dye in the water tank and wait 30 minutes. If the water in the toilet bowl has turned red, then you have a toilet leak.

If you do not get a plumbing leak repaired, over time the leak will get worse and you could end up with a big messy repair job, especially if a sewer backs up and spills in the basement, which will end up being very expensive to fix. As part of a home maintenance program, the plumbing system should be regularly checked for leaks. If you have discovered a plumbing system leak, it is wise to contact a professional plumber who will be able repair the leak properly and end up saving you much more money than if you had just ignored the leak.

We all have them home improvement project that need to be done. Fix a floor, paint a room, and the list goes on and on. But, you do not want to rush into a project like this. If you do you will find yourself in the middle of the project and find that you don’t have what you need to finish. When you start a project you always want to finish or you will have on your hands one of them several project that never got finished. The key to this problem is preparation. If you have a plan and are well prepared you can start and finish without flaw.

Before you begin you want to make a plan of action. Try writing down everything you will need to do to complete the project. While you are writing think about the project and you can will be able to think of any problems that may come up. This way you will already have your solution ready. A checklist is great when doing a home improvement project.

The next step will be research. Researching your project will give you tips and ideas on how to accomplish the project. Look your project up on the internet, get books on it, and even talk to people about what you are trying to do. The more information you have the better prepared you will be and the project will be a whole lot easier.

It is also best to have all the tools you will need before you start your project. It can be very frustrating to find out that half way through your project that you do not have the right tool. While doing the research make sure you make a list of all supplies and tools you will need so you don’t have to make extra trips to the supply store. These projects can be fun but they can also be frustrating if you have to make several trips to the store because you forgot certain things.

The same applies to the materials you will need. Make sure that you have all the paint you will need to finish your project. When building something it is best to make sure that you have enough wood to finish the job. If you don’t get enough because you tried to save money you will just have to waste that money to buy gas to go buy some more wood.

When you are buying your materials and tools do not just buy from the first place you find take a little time to find a good deal. Try looking online or at several different supply stores to find a great deal. You can usually get great deals online you will just have to wait for them to be shipped. You will be even more proud of your project when you save money on it.

Lastly when you are ready to start make sure that all your tools and materials are organized. This way when you start you do not have to be looking around to find what you need. You need to have every thing you are going to used laid out in the order that you will use them. This will save you time and make your project a whole more enjoyable.

Home improvement projects are meant to be enjoyable. You are making a change to your home that you will enjoy for years to come. If you will just take a little time to get prepared you will save yourself a lot of frustration and headaches.
Septic tank systems are required for every home and building that requires plumbing. These systems safely remove and treat waste water before returning the clean water to the water table. There are different types of septic systems available, including alternative septic systems. Alternative septic systems are usually installed in ‘difficult’ sites with conventional methods. The type of alternative chosen depends on the type of drain field, climate, and soil conditions.

The following are the different kinds of alternative septic systems:

Sand Filter Septic System: This septic system is used in an area that lacks enough soil for waste water treatment. The sand is used to treat the wastewater before it enters the drain field. The system consists of the septic tank, pump and pump chamber, sand filter, and drain field. The sand separates the pump tank from the drain field. As well, the sand is used replace the shortage of soil in the area where the tank is installed. The system can be installed above the ground or below the ground.

Aerobic Treatment Unit (ATU): This system uses oxygen as part of the break down process. The result is cleaner treated wastewater. The unit has an aeration chamber where bacteria reside. These vegetative microbes will break down and digest the waste. Aerobic treatment units will generate clean wastewater.

Mound Septic System: For the Mound Septic System, there is a particular type of drainage system that is elevated above ground level or directly on the ground surface. There is specific sand that is placed over the ground. Treatment of the wastewater involves the use of the sand. It is composed of a gravel bed that contains a network of pressurized pipes. The wastewater is delivered to a dosing tank. After it goes to the dosing tank, the water goes to the soil absorption field.

Gravity Septic System: This system utilizes gravity as the main part of the wastewater treatment process. By doing so, the wastewater travels through the septic tank into the drainage field. The drainage field consists of a group of trenches. The final treatment of the waste matter is done by the soil. A Gravity Septic System works best when there is dry soil. It is the most widely used alternative septic tank system.

Pressure Distribution System: This system is powered by dosing chambers and a series of small pipes. It provides dosing and resting cycles to ensure uniform wastewater is dispersed in the drainage field.

The first sign that a homeowner may need to switch from a conventional septic system to an alternative septic system is if they experience flooding or unusual water gathering in a backyard or field or if plumbers recommend it to them. Because there are a variety of different septic systems available, including alternative septic systems, it is important to understand the benefits of each system and determine which type of system is best for your property and home. When installing any type of septic system, the installation should only be performed by a professional to ensure it is done properly and safely.

At some point, most homeowners will have to deal with a clogged drain. In most instances, the clogged drain is the result of not properly cleaning the drain. When you do not regularly clean a drain, over time, foreign matter can accumulate and clog the drain. Not only is it a frustrating experience trying to unclog the drain, but there is often an unpleasant odour caused by the build up foreign debris and bacteria. Cleaning the drain will help prevent an annoying drain clog.

The following are a few basic tips to safely performing drain cleaning:

1. One tip to safely cleaning a drain is to pour about a tablespoon of baking soda down the drain. Then, pour a half a cup of lemon juice or vinegar down the drain. Let the mixture sit in the drain for about 30 to 60 minutes. There will be a bubbling chemical reaction which breaks up the debris. Then, run really hot water through the drain to get rid of all the debris. Not only will this method clean the drain, but it will keep the drain free of odours. To ensure the drain stays free of debris, run hot water through the drain every few days.

2. To keep the drain clean and odour free, every week add the baking soda and vinegar or lemon juice mixture into the drain and run the hot water through it. This will prevent the accumulation of foreign mater and odours.

3. An effective method of cleaning the plumbing drain is to add brine, a mixture of salt and water, down the drain. This is an effective method of preventing the accumulation of grease, soap, and oil such as cooking oil.

4. If your drain and pipes are quite dirty and requires a stronger cleaner, there are a number of different chemical cleaners on the market. It is important to note that some cleaners are quite corrosive so make sure if you use the cleaner, you will not be damaging your pipes. These cleaners also can give off toxic fumes, so it is important not to inhale the fumes. You can wear a mask or you can open a window and then leave the room after you have added the cleaner. As well, chemical cleaners are not usually safe to use on plastic pipes.

5. There are a number of natural drain cleaners available. They are better for the environment and will not damage your pipes. You can purchase these natural cleaners at a plumbing supply store and hardware stores.

6. Drain strainer inserts are useful for stopping substances from falling into the drains. To ensure that your drains are free of mould, mildew, bacteria, and foreign matter, after each cleaning, it is important to run hot water through the pipes.

The best solution to preventing a clogged drain is to maintain a proper drain cleaning schedule which includes the sink. Cleaning a sink and the drain after each use is the best prevention. If you develop a problem with your drains that you cannot repair, it is important to call a professional plumber.

If you are going to sell your home, then there are a number of things that you can do in order to increase the value of your home and get a better profit from the sale. Home improvement does not have to be expensive and you can even do most things yourself.

Having freshly painted rooms is important, especially in the rooms that are used most often such as the bathroom, living room and kitchen. In these rooms it is best to stick with neutral colors as these are more likely to appeal to a larger number of people.

The kitchen is a focus area for people when they are looking at homes. If you can it is worthwhile doing a small renovation of the kitchen area and ensuring that everything is in good condition. Make sure that the fittings in the kitchen and the pantry are up to scratch and that the counter space is also in good condition. A secret to improve the appearance of the kitchen is to get new appliances installed to bring up the tone.

Storage space is another area that most home owners are interested in checking out. You can install better storage options inexpensively in the wardrobes, cupboards and garage. It is also important that there is no clutter around the house as this gives a bad impression with regards to the storage and makes the house seem smaller.

The outside of the house is the first impression that a potential home buyer will see, so you want it to be a good one. Make sure the garden is neat and attractive by sprucing up the yard. Drought proof and hardy plants are best installed and ensure that the lawn is in good condition, you can talk to the folk at your local nursery to get advice on the best plants for your local environment. If you are very busy, then it is worth getting a gardener to look after the yard to get it into good condition before you put the home on the market.

As well as the garden, make sure that your exterior is fresh by repainting it. A neutral color is again the best choice and this tells potential buyers that the home is well maintained. Also check that the fittings on the outside of the home are in good condition and that light bulbs are in working condition.

Redecorating the entry area of the home can also help to give a good first impression of the home. Put in potted plants, lighting or home decor accents to ensure that it looks fresh and modern. This is an inexpensive and effective way to leave potential buyers with a favorable impression of your home.

Home improvement techniques for your home do not have to be expensive, but they can be very effective and help to both increase the sale price of your home as well as helping it to sell more quickly. When it comes to selling, it is rarely worthwhile to make huge changes to the home as you want to ensure that you will get the money back on your investment in the sale price.

Perform simple home renovations and home improvements to ensure high quality and a job well done. From plumbing fixtures painting jobs, fixing up your house never seemed so easy.
